Velvet Disease: How to Spot It Before You Lose the Tank

Velvet kills faster than ich and is harder to see, which is a bad combination. By the time most keepers recognise it, they have lost fish. If you suspect it, the identification below takes two minutes and is worth doing tonight.

What velvet is

Velvet is caused by parasitic dinoflagellates — Amyloodinium in saltwater, Piscinoodinium in freshwater, both commonly called Oodinium. Unlike most fish parasites, they contain chlorophyll and photosynthesise, which is relevant to treatment.

They attack the gills first and the body later. That single fact explains why velvet kills so quickly and why it is missed: the damage is happening somewhere you cannot see, and by the time the coating is obvious on the flanks the fish has been suffocating for days.

Identifying it

The flashlight test

This is the diagnostic that matters. Turn off the room lights, wait a moment, then shine a torch along the fish’s side at a shallow angle rather than straight on. Velvet shows as a fine gold, yellow, or rust-coloured metallic dust with a distinct sheen. Under normal aquarium lighting it is close to invisible.

Velvet vs. ich

  • Particle size: velvet is much finer — powdered sugar versus table salt.
  • Colour: gold, yellow, or rusty. Ich is white.
  • Coverage: velvet forms a dusting or sheen over broad areas. Ich is discrete separate dots.
  • Speed: velvet can kill within days. Ich usually takes longer.
  • First signs: velvet starts with breathing distress before visible marks. Ich usually shows spots first.

Behaviour comes first

Before anything is visible, look for rapid or laboured gill movement, gasping at the surface or hanging by the filter outflow, flashing against decor, clamped fins, loss of appetite, and lethargy. In a tank where fish are breathing hard and dying with no obvious cause, velvet belongs at the top of your list.

Treatment

Velvet is an emergency. Treat the whole tank — by the time one fish shows it, the parasite is throughout the system.

Darkness

Because these parasites photosynthesise, blacking out the tank deprives them of a significant energy source. Turn off the light and cover the tank completely for the duration of treatment. This is simple, free, and genuinely effective as a supporting measure.

Medication

Copper-based treatments are the standard and most reliable option, but copper demands care: it is lethal to invertebrates, absorbed by substrate and rock, and the therapeutic window is narrow. Use a copper test kit and dose to a measured level rather than trusting the bottle. Treat in a bare hospital tank where possible.

For freshwater tanks, or where copper is unsuitable, a formalin and malachite green combination is an alternative. Chelated copper is gentler than ionic but still not invertebrate-safe.

Supporting measures

Raise aeration substantially — the gills are compromised and oxygen is the limiting factor for survival. Raising temperature moderately speeds the life cycle so parasites reach the treatable free-swimming stage sooner, but only if oxygenation is good. Remove carbon filtration, which strips medication.

Duration

As with ich, only the free-swimming stage is vulnerable. Continue for at least a week past the last visible sign. Stopping early is the standard reason velvet returns.

Prognosis, honestly

Caught early, before serious gill damage, survival is reasonable. Caught after fish are gasping, it is often too late for the worst-affected individuals — gill tissue does not recover quickly and the fish suffocates even after the parasite is gone. This is a disease where a day of delay changes the outcome, which is exactly why the flashlight check is worth doing at the first sign of unexplained heavy breathing.

Prevention

Quarantine every new fish for two to four weeks, and do the flashlight check during that window. Velvet is almost always introduced — it does not appear in a closed system on its own. Keep water quality stable and avoid the stress events that let a low-level infection take hold.
