Aquarium pH Crash: How to Raise pH Safely Without Shocking Fish
Before you add anything to raise pH, understand the single most important principle: stability matters far more than the number. Most community fish thrive anywhere from 6.5 to 8.0 provided it is steady. Almost none tolerate swinging between them. More fish are killed by people correcting pH than by the pH itself.
So the first question is not “how do I raise it” but “why is it falling.”
KH is the answer to almost everything here
Carbonate hardness (KH) is your water’s buffering capacity — its ability to resist pH change. It is the parameter nobody tests and the one that explains nearly every pH problem.
The nitrogen cycle continuously produces acid. KH neutralises it. As it does, KH is consumed. When KH drops below roughly 3 dKH there is nothing left to absorb the acid, and pH does not drift gently downward — it collapses, often overnight.
If your pH is falling, test KH. If KH is low, that is your entire problem, and raising KH fixes pH permanently. Chasing pH directly without addressing KH means doing it again next month.
Why KH gets depleted
- Infrequent water changes — the most common cause. Fresh water replenishes buffer; without it the buffer runs out.
- Naturally soft tap water — some supplies have very little buffering to begin with.
- Driftwood and botanicals — tannins actively lower pH.
- Peat or certain substrates — some active soils deliberately lower pH and consume buffer.
- Heavy bioload — more waste, more acid, faster depletion.
- CO2 injection — lowers pH directly while running.
Raising it safely
The rule: no more than 0.2 pH units per day. A fast correction is more dangerous than a low reading. Fish adapted to pH 6.0 moved suddenly to 7.5 can die from the shock even though 7.5 is a “better” number.
Water changes with harder water
If your tap water has decent KH, regular water changes are the safest fix. Small, frequent changes raise pH gradually and replenish buffer at the same time.
Crushed coral or aragonite
The best long-term solution for a soft-water tank. Put crushed coral in a mesh bag in the filter or mix it into the substrate. It dissolves slowly as pH falls and stops dissolving as pH rises — a self-regulating buffer that will not overshoot.
Start with a small amount and increase gradually. This is the approach most experienced keepers use because it cannot crash the tank.
Baking soda — carefully
Sodium bicarbonate raises KH and pH quickly. That speed is the danger. Use only for a genuine emergency, dissolve it in a container of tank water before adding, dose about a quarter teaspoon per 10 gallons at a time, and wait 24 hours before repeating. Never dump it in dry.
Commercial buffers
They work. Follow dosing exactly, and be aware that many are designed to hold a specific pH, which can fight your source water and needs continual re-dosing.
Things that do not work
Adding limestone or shells is slow and imprecise but harmless. Aerating more raises pH slightly by driving off CO2 — a minor effect, though it can help in a CO2-injected tank at night. Adding random pH-up products without testing KH first is how people end up on a permanent rollercoaster.
When you should leave it alone
If your pH is stable at 6.4 and your fish are eating, colouring up, and behaving normally, do nothing. A stable “wrong” pH is far better than a correct one that moves. Test KH monthly, keep it above 3 dKH, do regular water changes, and pH mostly takes care of itself.
