Cloudy White Water in a New Tank: Bacterial Bloom Explained

You set up the tank, filled it, and within a few days the water turned milky white. It is the single most reported new-tank problem, and in most cases it is not only harmless but a sign the tank is doing exactly what it should.

The important thing is telling a bacterial bloom apart from the three other things that make water cloudy, because only one of them needs intervention.

Identify your cloudiness by colour

Milky or greyish white — bacterial bloom

Uniform haze, like someone stirred in a teaspoon of milk. Appears within the first two to six weeks of a new setup, often after adding fish or food. This is a population explosion of heterotrophic bacteria feeding on dissolved organic waste. Harmless in itself, and it resolves on its own.

Green — algae bloom

Free-floating single-celled algae, driven by too much light and too many nutrients. Different problem, different fix.

Brown or yellow-tinted — tannins

Leaching from driftwood or botanicals. Harmless, slightly lowers pH, and clears over weeks or with activated carbon. Many keepers deliberately want it.

Grey and gritty right after setup — substrate dust

Unrinsed gravel or sand. Clears within 24 hours as it settles, or immediately with mechanical filtration. Rinse substrate before it goes in next time.

Why a bacterial bloom happens

Two very different bacterial populations matter in a new tank.

Heterotrophic bacteria consume dissolved organic carbon — uneaten food, waste, decaying plant matter. They reproduce in hours, and when there is a sudden surplus of organics they multiply so fast that the colony becomes visible as suspended haze. That is your cloudy water.

Autotrophic bacteria are the ones that convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate — your actual biological filter. These reproduce far more slowly, on the order of days, and they colonise surfaces rather than floating free.

A bloom means there is more organic waste than the system is processing, and the fast-reproducing bacteria got there first. As the slower nitrifying colony establishes and the surplus organics are consumed, the bloom starves out and the water clears.

What to do

Mostly, wait

A bloom typically clears in three to ten days on its own. The most common mistake is panicking and doing something that makes it worse.

Do test your water

The bloom is harmless. What may be happening alongside it is not. In a new tank, cloudy water often coincides with ammonia and nitrite rising. Test both. If either is above zero and you have fish in the tank, that needs handling regardless of the cloudiness.

Stop overfeeding

Excess food is the fuel. Feed only what the fish clear in about 30 seconds, once a day. Skipping a day or two during a bloom is fine.

Do not do these things

  • Do not do enormous daily water changes to clear it. You will remove the organics the bacteria are consuming, they will bloom again when levels rebuild, and you prolong the cycle. Change water because your ammonia or nitrite demands it, not because the water looks cloudy.
  • Do not clean or replace the filter. You are trying to grow the bacterial colony, not remove it.
  • Do not add a clarifier as a first move. Flocculants clump particles so the filter can catch them, which treats the appearance and not the cause. They can also clog filter media.
  • Do not add more fish. More bioload, more organics, longer bloom.

When cloudy water is actually a warning

Take it seriously if the water is cloudy and ammonia or nitrite is elevated, if fish are gasping, lethargic, or clamped, if there is a foul or sulphurous smell (suggesting something dead or anaerobic pockets in the substrate), or if the tank has been established for months and suddenly goes cloudy — that usually means something died, the filter failed, or a big organic load entered the system. Find it.

Preventing the next one

Rinse substrate thoroughly before adding it. Cycle the tank before adding fish, ideally fishless. Add fish gradually rather than all at once. Feed conservatively. Vacuum the substrate at water changes. Seed a new tank with established filter media if you can — the nitrifying colony arrives ready-made and the bloom window shrinks dramatically.

A bloom in a brand-new tank is normal. A bloom in a mature tank is a symptom.
