High Nitrates in Your Aquarium: How Much Is Too Much?
Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle and the one parameter that is supposed to accumulate. That makes it easy to ignore — it will not kill a fish overnight the way ammonia does. What it does instead is grind fish down over months, and most keepers never connect the two.
What the numbers mean
- 0–20 ppm — good. Target range for most tanks.
- 20–40 ppm — acceptable, but your water change schedule is only just keeping up.
- 40–80 ppm — chronic stress. Suppressed immunity, poor colour, reduced growth, no breeding.
- Above 80 ppm — actively harmful. Expect disease outbreaks.
- Above 160 ppm — dangerous, and increasingly associated with sudden losses.
Sensitivity varies a lot. Shrimp, most soft-water species, discus, and fry are far less tolerant than livebearers or goldfish. Corals and marine invertebrates need it under 10.
What high nitrate actually does
It is rarely the proximate cause of death, which is why it gets dismissed. What it produces is a chronically stressed fish: weakened immune response, faded colour, slowed growth, refusal to breed, and vulnerability to every opportunistic disease in the tank.
When someone has recurring fin rot, or fish that keep getting ich, or a tank where nothing ever quite thrives — chronically elevated nitrate is one of the first things worth checking.
There is also “old tank syndrome”: nitrate creeping up over months while the keeper does small infrequent water changes. The fish adapt slowly. Then a large water change suddenly returns the water to normal and the shock kills them. If you find nitrate above 80 ppm, bring it down gradually — several 25% changes over a week, not one 80% change today.
Why yours is high
- Not enough water changes. The overwhelming majority of cases. Water changes are the primary nitrate export.
- Overstocking. More fish, more waste, more nitrate.
- Overfeeding. Uneaten food is pure nitrate input.
- Detritus buildup. Waste trapped in substrate, decor, and filter media continues breaking down.
- Dirty filter. A filter packed with accumulated sludge is a nitrate factory.
- Your tap water. Genuinely common in agricultural areas — some supplies come out at 20–40 ppm. Test your tap. If this is you, water changes alone cannot fix it and you need RO or nitrate-removing media.
- Few or no live plants. Plants consume nitrate directly.
Bringing it down
Water changes, done properly
The primary tool. A 50% change halves nitrate. Weekly 30–50% keeps most tanks in range. Vacuum the substrate while you do it — that removes the detritus that would otherwise keep generating more.
Feed less
What the fish clear in 30 seconds, once daily. Most tanks are overfed by a wide margin.
Add fast-growing plants
Hornwort, water sprite, pothos with roots in the water and leaves out, floating plants generally. Fast growers consume nitrate at a meaningful rate, and pothos in particular is very effective and hard to kill.
Clean the filter
Rinse mechanical media in used tank water monthly. You are removing trapped waste, not bacteria — the bacteria live on the biological media, which you leave alone.
Reduce stocking
Unpopular, but if nitrate climbs past 40 within a week of a 50% change, the tank is carrying more fish than it can process.
Things that do not work as well as advertised
Nitrate-removing resins work but are expensive and need regular replacement — useful when tap water is the source, not as a substitute for maintenance. Deep sand beds and refugiums work in marine systems and are impractical in most freshwater tanks. “Nitrate reducer” bottled products are largely ineffective.
There is no shortcut here. Water changes and feeding discipline are the answer, and they are the answer permanently.
