Fish Gasping at the Surface: 6 Causes Ranked by Urgency
Fish at the surface gulping air is one of the clearest distress signals you get, and it is genuinely urgent — but it is not always what it looks like. The obvious conclusion is low oxygen. Several of the real causes have nothing to do with oxygen levels at all, and treating the wrong one wastes the time you do not have.
Work down this list in order.
1. Ammonia or nitrite poisoning — check first
This is the most common cause and the most misread. Both ammonia and nitrite damage the fish’s ability to take up and carry oxygen. Nitrite in particular binds to haemoglobin so the blood cannot transport oxygen — the fish suffocates in perfectly oxygenated water, which is why adding an airstone appears to do nothing.
Test ammonia and nitrite before anything else. If either is above zero, that is your answer: large water change immediately, and add aquarium salt if nitrite is the problem.
2. Genuinely low oxygen
Real oxygen depletion has recognisable triggers: high temperature (warm water holds less oxygen), overstocking, a stopped filter or airpump, a heatwave, dense plant mass at night consuming oxygen, or a medication that reduces gas exchange.
The tell is that every fish is affected, and the bottom-dwellers come up too. When your corydoras and plecos are at the surface, oxygen is genuinely low.
Fix: increase surface agitation, add an airstone, lower the temperature, do a water change.
3. Gill parasites or infection
Velvet, gill flukes, and bacterial gill infections damage the tissue directly. Suspect this when breathing is laboured and rapid but water parameters are clean and other fish seem fine. Look for gills held open, only one gill working, or a fine gold dust on the body (velvet — check with a torch in a dark room).
4. Temperature too high
A stuck heater or summer heat both raise the metabolic demand for oxygen while lowering how much the water can hold. Check the thermometer — a failed heater is a common and fast killer. Cool gradually; a sudden drop is its own shock.
5. CO2 overdose
In planted tanks running injected CO2, too much drives oxygen out and drops pH sharply. Fish gather at the surface, often in the evening after a full photoperiod of injection. Turn the CO2 off and aerate hard.
6. Normal behaviour for the species
Before you panic: labyrinth fish — bettas, gouramis, paradise fish — breathe atmospheric air as a matter of course and will visit the surface regularly. Some catfish gulp air too. This is normal, unhurried, and not accompanied by rapid gill movement or clamped fins.
Distinguishing distress from normal
Real gasping looks like: rapid gill movement, mouth working continuously at the surface, fish hanging by the filter outflow where oxygen is highest, clamped fins, and multiple fish doing it. Normal surface breathing is occasional, brief, and the fish returns to normal behaviour immediately.
What to do in the first ten minutes
- Test ammonia and nitrite.
- Check the thermometer.
- Confirm the filter and airpump are running.
- Increase surface agitation regardless of cause — it costs nothing and helps most scenarios.
- Do a 30–50% water change unless you have specifically ruled out water quality.
Water change and aeration are the right first move in almost every version of this problem, and they are safe even if you have not yet identified the cause.
