How to Read an Aquarium Test Strip (And Why Yours May Be Lying)
Test strips are the most-used and least-trusted tool in the hobby. The criticism is partly fair and partly a matter of people using them wrong. Here is how to read one properly, and when the number you are looking at cannot be believed.
Reading one correctly
Most misreads come from technique, not the strip.
- Check the expiry date. Reagent pads degrade. An expired strip does not fail obviously — it just reads wrong, usually low.
- Keep the bottle sealed and dry. Humidity ruins strips in the container. Never touch the pads, never leave the cap off, and do not store them in a damp cabinet under the tank.
- Dip, do not swirl. One second in the water, straight in and out. Swirling washes reagent off the pads.
- Do not shake it dry. Hold it horizontally. If you flick it or hold it vertically, reagents run between pads and contaminate each other — this is the single most common cause of bizarre readings.
- Time it. Each pad has its own development window, usually 30 to 60 seconds. Reading early or late gives a different colour. Set a timer.
- Read in natural daylight. Aquarium lights, warm bulbs, and phone screens all shift colour perception. Take it to a window.
- Hold it against the chart, not near it. Colour comparison is relative and surprisingly sensitive to what is next to it.
Where strips are genuinely weak
Ammonia. Most multi-strips do not test ammonia at all, and the ones that do are the least reliable pad on the strip. Ammonia is the parameter where accuracy matters most, and it is the one strips handle worst. Use a liquid ammonia test.
Low-range precision. Strips distinguish “zero” from “some” reasonably well but struggle between 0 and 0.25 ppm — exactly the range that matters for nitrite in a cycling tank.
Colour blindness and lighting. A meaningful proportion of people cannot reliably distinguish the pink-to-purple gradients used for nitrite and nitrate.
Where they are good
Strips are excellent for trend monitoring. Weekly testing on an established tank, watching whether nitrate is climbing, whether KH is falling, whether pH is drifting. They are fast enough that people actually do them, and a strip used weekly beats a liquid kit used twice a year.
They are also good for a quick sanity check before a water change, and for testing tap water so you know what you are starting from.
When to reach for a liquid kit instead
- Anything ammonia-related
- Cycling a new tank, where small nitrite changes matter
- Diagnosing a sick fish, where you need a defensible number
- Confirming any strip result that surprises you
The practical setup most experienced keepers land on: strips weekly for trends, a liquid ammonia kit on the shelf, and a full liquid kit for troubleshooting.
What each parameter should read
- Ammonia: 0. Always.
- Nitrite: 0. Always.
- Nitrate: under 40 ppm, ideally under 20.
- pH: stable matters more than any particular number. Most community fish adapt to anything from 6.5 to 8.0; almost none tolerate a swing.
- KH: above 3 dKH. This is your buffer against pH crashes and it is the parameter people ignore until their pH collapses.
- GH: match to species — soft for most tetras and rasboras, hard for livebearers and African cichlids.
Log it or it is wasted
A single reading tells you very little. The value is in the trend — nitrate climbing week over week means your water change schedule is not keeping up; KH falling means your buffer is being consumed and a pH crash is coming. Most people test, glance, and forget, which throws away the actual information.
