Nitrite Spike: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Nitrite is the middle step of the nitrogen cycle and the one people forget to test. It is roughly as dangerous as ammonia, it kills in a way that is easy to misread, and a spike almost always means your biological filter is only half built.

Why nitrite is dangerous

Nitrite is absorbed across the gills and binds to haemoglobin, converting it to methaemoglobin, which cannot carry oxygen. The fish effectively suffocates in fully oxygenated water.

This is why nitrite poisoning is so often misdiagnosed. The fish gasps at the surface and hangs by the filter outflow — textbook low-oxygen behaviour — so keepers add an airstone and wait. The aeration does not help, because the problem is not the water’s oxygen content. It is the blood’s inability to carry it.

The other name for this is “brown blood disease,” after the colour change in the gills, which can look brownish or muddy rather than healthy red.

What the numbers mean

  • 0 ppm — the only acceptable long-term reading.
  • 0.25–0.5 ppm — harmful. Water change today.
  • 1–2 ppm — dangerous. Emergency response.
  • Above 2 ppm — frequently fatal.

Emergency response

1. Water change

50%, temperature-matched and dechlorinated. Repeat as needed to hold nitrite under 0.25 ppm. This is the primary tool.

2. Add aquarium salt — the specific fix

This is the one genuinely clever intervention in aquarium keeping and it is underused. Chloride ions compete with nitrite for the same uptake site in the gills. Adding chloride blocks nitrite absorption almost immediately, even while nitrite is still present in the water.

Around 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons provides meaningful protection. It does not lower the nitrite reading — it stops the nitrite getting into the fish. Reduce the dose for scaleless species such as loaches and corydoras, and be aware that most plants dislike salt.

3. Stop feeding

Less food, less ammonia, less nitrite. Several days without food is safe for healthy adult fish.

4. Increase aeration anyway

It will not fix the binding problem, but a fish with reduced oxygen-carrying capacity benefits from every advantage.

5. Do not clean the filter

The bacteria that consume nitrite live there. Leave it alone.

Why it happened

A nitrite spike means ammonia-eating bacteria are established but nitrite-eating bacteria are not yet keeping up. That is a normal, expected stage in a new tank — ammonia rises and falls, then nitrite rises and falls, then nitrate accumulates and you are cycled.

In an established tank, a spike means something disrupted the colony:

  • Filter media replaced or rinsed in chlorinated tap water
  • Medication that damaged the biological filter
  • A power outage that left the filter off long enough for bacteria to die
  • Too many fish added at once
  • A dead fish decomposing somewhere
  • Over-cleaning the substrate and filter in the same week

Getting to zero

Test daily. Water change whenever nitrite exceeds 0.25 ppm. Keep salt in the water throughout. Do not add fish. Do not clean the filter. Feed sparingly.

The nitrite-consuming bacteria are slower to establish than the ammonia-consuming ones, so expect one to three weeks. Seeding with mature filter media from an established tank is by far the fastest route — squeezing a used sponge into your filter transplants the exact colony you are waiting to grow.

You are done when ammonia and nitrite both read zero and nitrate is present. Nitrate is the endpoint, and seeing it is the confirmation the cycle is complete.

Prevention

Cycle fully before adding fish. Add livestock in small groups weeks apart. Never replace all filter media at once — rotate it. Rinse media in used tank water only. Test weekly, including nitrite, not just when something looks wrong. Most keepers stop testing nitrite once a tank is established, which is precisely why a spike catches them out.
