Fin Rot in Aquarium Fish: Early Signs, Causes and How to Stop It

Fin rot is the most over-diagnosed and under-understood condition in the hobby. People see a ragged fin, buy an antibacterial medication, dose the tank, and are surprised when it comes back a month later.

The reason it comes back is that fin rot is a symptom, not a disease. It’s what happens when opportunistic bacteria — present in every aquarium, always — get an opening because something has compromised the fish. Treating the bacteria without finding that something is treating half the problem.

What fin rot actually looks like

Progression matters more than any single snapshot:

  • Early: the fin edge loses its clean line. It looks slightly frayed or milky, sometimes with a faint white or grey margin. Easy to miss, and this is the stage where it’s trivial to reverse.
  • Moderate: visible erosion. Fins look torn or moth-eaten, the edges may darken to black or red, and the fin is measurably shorter than a week ago.
  • Advanced: erosion reaches the fin base and starts on the body. Red streaking appears. At this point you’re dealing with a systemic infection, and the odds drop sharply.

The single most useful diagnostic is a photo from a week ago. Fin damage that is receding over time is rot. Fin damage that is static or filling back in is something else.

Fin rot vs. the two things it’s confused with

Fin nipping

Damage from tankmates produces clean tears and notches, often V-shaped, with no discoloured margin. It appears suddenly rather than progressing, and it’s usually worst on the longest, most flowing fins — which is why bettas, angelfish, and fancy guppies get targeted. Watch the tank for ten minutes with the lights on; nippers are rarely subtle. Tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and most puffers are common culprits.

Fin biting (self-inflicted)

Bettas in particular bite their own fins, and it’s frequently misdiagnosed as rot. The tells: damage is symmetrical between left and right, the missing pieces are large chunks rather than progressive erosion, it appears overnight, and the edges look clean rather than ragged or discoloured. Biting is a stress and boredom behaviour — the fix is tank conditions and enrichment, not medication.

What’s actually causing it

In practice, fin rot traces back to one of four things. Find yours before you medicate.

1. Water quality — the cause in most cases

Ammonia and nitrite are directly damaging to fish tissue and immune function, and any detectable level is a problem. Chronically high nitrate (above about 40 ppm) causes long-term stress that shows up in the fins first. Test before you treat. If ammonia or nitrite is above zero, that is your cause and no medication will hold while it stays that way.

2. Physical damage that got infected

A torn fin from netting, sharp decor, or a fight is an open door. Check your decor for rough edges — a fin that catches on plastic plants or a jagged rock will keep re-injuring.

3. Temperature stress

Fish kept below their species range have suppressed immune systems. This is very common with bettas kept in unheated bowls; they’re tropical and need 78–80°F, and at room temperature they are permanently immunocompromised.

4. Crowding and aggression

Chronic stress from an overstocked tank or a bullying tankmate suppresses immunity as effectively as bad water. This one is invisible on a test kit.

How to treat it

Mild cases — no medication needed

Early fin rot in a tank with a water quality problem usually resolves on clean water alone.

  1. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and temperature. Record the numbers.
  2. Do a 25–50% water change, and repeat daily until parameters are correct.
  3. Vacuum the substrate — decomposing food and waste feed the bacteria.
  4. Correct the temperature to the species’ range.
  5. Remove or sand down anything sharp.
  6. Watch the fin edge for 5–7 days.

Healthy regrowth is usually clear or slightly pale and grows from the damaged edge outward. Seeing it means you’ve solved the problem.

Moderate cases

Do everything above, and add aquarium salt at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons if your species tolerates it — reduce or skip for scaleless fish. Salt supports healing and slows bacterial growth. Many moderate cases still don’t need antibiotics.

Advanced cases

Erosion into the body or red streaking means a systemic infection, and this is where antibacterial medication is genuinely warranted. Treat in a hospital tank where you can dose accurately without wiping out your display tank’s biological filter, complete the full course even after improvement, and remove carbon filtration while dosing.

Skip botanical “leaf extract” remedies as a primary treatment for advanced cases. They’re mild antiseptics that can help minor healing, but they will not resolve a systemic bacterial infection, and time spent on them is time the fish doesn’t have. They’re also poorly tolerated by labyrinth fish like bettas and gouramis.

What recovery looks like

Fins regrow, but slowly — expect weeks, not days, and longer for large flowing fins. New growth often comes in clear or lighter-coloured and may never fully match the original shape or colour, especially if erosion reached the fin rays. That’s cosmetic. What matters is that the edge stops receding.

Photograph the fin weekly against something fixed for scale. Progress is hard to judge by eye day to day, and the photos will tell you within a week whether your intervention worked.

Preventing it

Fin rot is close to entirely preventable, and prevention is unglamorous: keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, keep nitrate under 40 ppm, hold a stable temperature in the correct range, don’t overstock, choose tankmates that won’t nip long fins, and remove sharp decor. Do those things and you will essentially never see it.
